What is Jev Engineering?
The term describing the three-tier software architecture: an LLM that writes, Jev that decides, and code that acts.
The 3-Tier Jev Engineering Stack
Tier 1: Generative
LLM that Writes
Drafting prose, complex code synthesis, open-ended ideation.
Tier 2: Decision
Jev that Decides
Routing, safety gates, tool selection, priority triage in 50ms.
Tier 3: Execution
Code that Acts
Deterministic functions, DB queries, API calls, browser clicks.
Why This Architecture Matters
Before Jev Engineering, developers forced large language models to handle every micro-choice inside autonomous loops. This led to:
- Brittle string parsing: LLMs unpredictably wrapping JSON in markdown backticks or adding apologies.
- Compounding latency: A 10-step browser agent waiting 3 seconds per step took 30+ seconds to book a flight.
- Astronomical costs: Paying frontier token prices just to decide "Is this customer angry? Yes/No".
The Rules of Jev Engineering
01
Never ask an LLM to make a routing decision
If the answer space is finite (A, B, C, or Fallback), hand it to Jev.
02
Keep output tokens free
Design state inputs cleanly. Jev output decisions have zero marginal token cost.
03
Always enforce a fallback gate
When Jev returns low calibrated confidence (<0.70), safely fall back to a human review or larger reasoning model.
